Majengo Community Development
The Majengo Project got started with Anju – a VTP volunteer at that time –May 2021. She is now an AOL teacher. She was conducting an intro online follow-up session – where Edwin attended. He had hazy wi-fi coverage, never the less continued. After class Anju had a talk with Edwin – and felt his genuine sincerity.
From there on Anju –helped sponsor for Edwin’s Happiness Course. Edwin partly paid and completed the course successfully. Coming to year 2024, Significant activities started in Majengo area.
About Community
A brief history and background of Majengo area
Pumwani ward is nestled within Kamkunji subcounty of Nairobi County. It is a place of diversity and resilience. This cosmopolitan enclave is home to both Christians and Muslims.
The years 2018 and 2019 marked a tumultuous period for Pumwani – facing violence and youth radicalism. This brought a rise to criminal activities and subsequent police brutality. The Al-Shabab terrorists – few –used to reside in this area.
Majengo, is a slum within Pumwani. The challenges faced for Majengo are:
The challenges mentioned below, are common in slums in capital city - Nairobi and poverty-stricken areas of Kenya e.g. Mombasa - 2nd capital city – area -Kisauni
- 1. Poverty
- 2. Prostitution – having risks of HIV/AIDS
- 3. Children are often compelled abandon their education to shoulder the economic burden of their families
- 4. High unemployment rates
- 5. Idealism – of youth and unemployed people
- 6. Teenage pregnancies
- 7. Drug and substance abuse –high in this area
- 8. Mental health issues due to the challenges in the area
- 9. Run down area – no proper rubbish disposal, water facility, road – weak infrastructure due to poverty
- 10. Weak infrastructure of the 2 community schools – run down building, less teachers etc. though on our survey – we understand –the government will help rebuild the school. This school is for ages 5-12 year.
